“In Tang Soo Do everyone is a winner because the stated goals are self-improvement and the enhancement of the mental and physical self.”
— Master Chun Sik Kim, President and Founder of the International Tang Soo Do Federation
Tang Soo Do
Our programs at Eagledove Martial Arts focus on teaching the traditional Korean art of Tang Soo Do.
Tang Soo Do originated approximately 2,000 years ago on the Korean peninsula. It is sometimes referred to as "Korean Karate", and its "hard" kicking and striking skills are the basis for the sport known as Taekwondo. (However, it is important to note that Tang Soo Do itself is not a “sport” - we train for self-improvement, not for competition.) Tang Soo Do also incorporates the "soft" self-defense techniques of escapes and joint locks that are often seen in martial arts such as Hapkido and Aikido.
The equal emphasis on "hard" and "soft" techniques makes Tang Soo Do practitioners into extremely well-balanced martial artists. This balance is also emphasized by our name, Eagledove Martial Arts. As the “dove”, we strive for peaceful solutions; as the “eagle”, we have the strength to fight for justice.
As part of the International Tang Soo Do Federation, our school teaches curriculum using the systems developed and maintained by Grandmaster Chun Sik Kim, one of the original masters who brought Tang Soo Do to the United States in the 1970's.
